Main results of medico-demographic investigation of Ukraine 2007

This report contains the results of Medico-demographic investigation of Ukraine's population in 2007 (MDIU-2007) by Ukrainian centre for social reform with State statistics committee of Ukraine. Macro International company provided financial and technical support for the investigation within USAID-sponsored project “Medico-demographic investigation: measurement” an contract No. GPO-C-00-03-00002-00. The project is designed to help countries collect data on birth rate, reproductive health, maternal and child health.

The materials of medico-demographic investigation of Ukraine's population (MDIU-2007) enable analysis of a range of data regarding birth rate and its factors that cannot be achieved by flow statistics: birth frequency in different population strata depending on material welfare; the number of all born children; intervals of child-births, as well as direct medico-demographic factors of birth-rate.

Previous investigations of family, marriage, and reproductive activity, as well as current interrogations in other countries prove that investigations are totally feasible as a research method of demographic attitudes. In particular, MDIU-2007 provides valuable information on reproductive orientations: desired number of children, intentions to limit childbirth, as well as the need of family planning services among different population groups.

MDIU-2007 also provided exclusive information which enables the analysis of gender aspects of decision-making (particularly, financial) in households, respondent opinions on sexual relations between spouses, problems of family violence.

Regarding woman health preservation, the section on termination of pregnancy is very important. Particularly, the investigation found an improvement in the situation with abortions compared to 1999. It also enabled to reveal regularities of artificial termination of pregnancy depending on pregnancy order number and the presence of children which would be impossible to do by means of flow statistics.

Of great importance for the elaboration of a measured state healthcare policy is the information of sections on antenatal prevention and population knowledge of TB and AIDS problems.

Considering a relatively low level of infant mortality in Ukraine and an insufficient sampling, the research failed to find any regularities in infant mortality depending on social characteristics (educational level of mothers) while other indexes of infant mortality and death mortality among children under 5 are registered by official statistics fully enough.

The results of MDIU-2007 enable to supplement the incomplete data base on contraception use in Ukraine and deepen the knowledge of the level of contraceptive culture among different population strata, as well as the factors which influence the choice of contraception methods.

Thus, the results of MDIU-2007 represented in the report will be of use for a wide range of professionals who investigate demographic situation and the state of healthcare system in Ukraine, as well as for people who elaborate strategic measures to overcome crisis phenomena in these spheres.
